Today Mojang has released the first snapshot of Minecraft 1.11 - Snapshot 16W32A. Without further delay, here's the full changelog from Mojang's website:

Notable changes:

Some mobs are now more afraid to get wet in the water

There are now more spawn eggs for many different mobs and this time they are working properly, so we’ll keep them

Mob types are now separated like this:

Guardian and Elder Guardian

Skeleton, Stray and Wither Skeleton

Zombie, Zombie Villager and Husk

Horse, Skeleton Horse, Zombie Horse, Mule and Donkey

Changed the duration of hunger and saturation effects

Broke some bugs so they should not happen anymore

Resource pack format changed slightly, it’s now using version 3

Version 3 resource packs have to use lowercase filenames for everything

Most commands can now use blockstate definitions instead of a numerical metadata value

Snowmen are now 10% less derpy

More robust handling of invalid items and hopefully less duping bugs due to this change

Minecraft survival guides are a dime a dozen - Minecraft wikis, forum posts, even physical books. But earlier today, Mojang announced that their most recent book - 'The Survivor's Book of Secrets', is now available in the United States. Previously, the book was only available across the pond in the United Kingdom.

The book, as you could probbably guess, is a collection of tips and tricks from the 'Survivors' - people who have played Minecraft for years and want to share their tips. I'm not too sure if I would get a book instead of reading online guides, but at least the book itself has a high quality. Mojang says they were inspired by World War II era manuals, and it certainly keeps in line with that design inside and out.

This might make a good gift for younger Minecraft players - I'll be the first to admit trying to navigate Minecraft wiki can be a pain. The book isn't too expensive either - it's $9.99 on Amazon for the hardcover version. The book is also available at Barnes & Noble, Walmart, Target, and other book retail stores.

Microsoft buying Mojang was full of uncertainty - Microsoft had a history with killing off game studios. But overall, Microsoft and Mojang have created a symbiotic relationship that is boosting both companies into massive profits.

Microsoft's current CEO Satya Nadella recently had an interview where he discussed purchasing Mojang and LinkedIn. In the interview, he stated that Microsoft is helping both Mojang and LinkedIn reach their goals:

"When I look at both Minecraft and LinkedIn, they're great businesses that are growing," Nadella told Bass. "And so, in fact, if anything, our core job is to take that franchise and give it more momentum. In the case of Minecraft, it's the biggest PC game, and we are the PC company. Their growth was moving to console. We have a console. Therefore, we were a perfect owner. Same thing with LinkedIn. They're a professional network for the world. We have the professional cloud. Time will tell, but I'm very, very bullish."

While Minecraft on consoles continues to be a major groth, Microsoft has also established a team at Microsoft that works with Mojang on Pocket Edition and Windows 10 Edition. Thanks to the efforts of that teamwork, Pocket Edition and Windows 10 Edition now regularly receive major updates that were never possible before. Remember when the Pocket Edition 0.9.0 update took almost a year?

Markus Persson, better as known as Notch online, somewhat fell off the grid after leaving Mojang. With his huge payout from Microsoft's purchase of Mojang, he bought a mansion in Los Angeles, California.

Besides his Twitter account, he has rarely spoken publicly since he left Mojang - but he recently had an interview with The Escapist that shed some light on his life post-Mojang.

One of the questions he was asked was, "Do you miss Minecraft?", here is his response:

Surprisingly not at all, no. I stopped working on it quite a while before I sold the company, or maybe half a year until I decided to sell it, so it wasn't like I was working on the game. I already felt like I had passed on the torch to Jens [Bergensten]. And then when I sold it I was afraid of how I was going to move on to the next stage of my life, whatever that is. But once I signed the papers I felt immediate relief. I never set out to be an entrepreneur. I don't want to build an empire, I just want to write code. I don't feel resentful about it. Sometimes, very rarely, but I'll start the game up and go, "wow, did we build this?" (laughs)

He goes on to say that he occasionally plays the game to see what is new, but not much more than that. The rest of the questions are unrelated to Minecraft, so if you want to see the rest of the interview, click the source link below.
Snapshots of the next release, Minecraft 1.11, may very well start next week.

It's very likely that we'll have the first 1.11 snapshot next week. It will not contain any features that we plan to reveal at #minecon2016

While it is disappointing that it likely won't contain any major features, it's still something to look forward to. Minecon 2016 features Endermen in most promotional material, which would be a hint at what Mojang is planning for 1.11.Corbin Davenporthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12580201916621383439noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8975551826666023390.post-7351800904944884652016-08-03T09:32:00.000-07:002016-08-03T09:32:13.097-07:00Mojang brings in new Minecraft PC developer

In the past year or so, rumors of Minecraft PC edition development slowing down or even ending have been rampant. With Pocket Edition and Windows 10 Edition having the goal of replicating all of PC Edition's features, the original game's ending seemed close.

But at least for now, the future of Minecraft PC Edition seem bright. Jens Bergensten, lead Minecraft PC developer, announced on Twitter that a new developer has joined the team:

At the office again! Happy to get back to work on Minecraft (PC/Java) with our newest team member, @_LadyAgnes \o/

Right now the new member is only known by her Twitter username 'LadyAgnes', as she has not yet been added to Mojang's official employees page. But with another developer on hand to work on PC Edition, it looks like Mojang is continuing to dedicate resources to the aging game.Corbin Davenporthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12580201916621383439noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8975551826666023390.post-32362744566984359432016-07-30T20:11:00.002-07:002016-07-30T20:11:54.519-07:00Minecraft: Windows 10 Edition is now one year old

It seemed like just yesterday we were surprised about the announcement of a Windows 10 Edition of Minecraft, and here we are a year later. While originally met with panic of the PC edition being discontinued (and just general confusion), it then became clear that it was part of Microsoft's master plan to make all editions share the same code.

Windows 10 Edition continues to be developed alongside (and share most of it's code with) Pocket Edition, and since the Windows 10 Edition release, updates for both editions have only become more and more frequent.

However you look at it, Mojang posted this video to celebrate the occasion:

One of the more interesting additions to Minecraft on consoles lately was the new Battle Mode - an exclusive minigame that allowed for competitive battle multiplayer, much like modded Minecraft PC servers. It proved popular with players, so Mojang is releasing their second Battle Map Pack today for consoles!

This pack includes three maps "created exclusively for the Battle mini-game", and that's pretty much it. Possibly not that exciting, but it only costs $2.99 USD.

Watch it in action:
Reddit user podpage posted this to the Minecraft subreddit yesterday, explaining he used the iOS HomeKit API to take commands from Siri. Here's his full technical explaination, if you're curious:

HomeKit Bridge is a simple HTTP-Interface. You can setup the Bridge server and connect your device to it (in my case a BukkitServer). To connect the Bridge to your iPhone you need an third party because "Home" in iOS10 don't accept your Bridge due the missing certificate (I used Eve). Let your iPhone sync and now you can use Siri on your iPhone oder AppleWatch to control your devices.

See the source link for the original Reddit post. However impracitcal it might be, it would be neat if he decides to release this as an app someday.

Mojang's goal with Minecraft PE is to bring the game (and thus, Windows 10 Edition as well) up to speed with the original game. Another piece of that puzzle could be coming soon - Ocean Monuments.

Yesterday, Tommaso (one of the Minecraft PE developers) posted this on Twitter:

With Ocean Monuments being the only naturally-generating objects in oceans, it's likely the surprise feature. Ocean Monuments were originally added in Minecraft PC 1.8, with 1.9 altering them to only appear very deep in the ocean.

And if it's not Ocean Monuments - then what do you think it could be? Let us know in the comments below.

If you've been reading us for a while, you may recall us mentioning Johan Bernhardsson - who previously worked for Mojang on Minecraft Pocket Edition. He singlehandedly developed Pocket Edition for over a year, and in his last days at Mojang, helped create the new Mac launcher for Minecraft.

After he left Mojang, he helped found Midnight Hub - an indie game studio also located in Sweden. He and several other developers are currently developing a game called Lake Ridden - a "story driven first-person horror game, set against a Scandinavian backdrop."

Sounds interesting? Here's the full description from their website:

When a girl is on a hike with her friends, her sister suddenly vanishes. While searching for her, she encounters an old, abandoned house. To survive, and ultimately save her sister, she must piece together the dark secret of the nearby town by finding clues, solving puzzles and interacting with former residents. But there are shadows out in the darkness. She’ll have to uncover an old conflict driven by envy, madness and hate.

Head on down to their development blog in the source link below for more information about the game's development. Midnight Hub aims to release Lake Ridden on PC in 2017.
Minecraft: Story Mode has hit a chord with gamers, becoming one of Telltale Games' most popular titles of all time. They and Mojang are more than happy to keep the story going, with the seventh episode apparently coming sometime this month.

Telltale Games' head of creative communications, Job Stauffer, shared on Twitter yesterday that the next episode will definitely be coming to players sometime this month.

Back in April, Microsoft started experimenting with training artificial intelligence inside a Minecraft world. The concept was interesting - using Minecraft's infinite world and varying terrain to teach AI to interact with environments. The multiplayer aspect even allowed researchers to observe and modify the AI while in action.

It was called Project AIX, and it has now been released under the Project Malmo name. If you're developing your own AI, you can check out Microsoft's GitHub repository for more information about the mod. While most Minecraft players won't be able to do anything with it, as it requires enough programming knowledge to develop simple AI, it will be an invaluable tool to those who do.
This article was sent in by Redstone Central reader Shawn. Enjoy!

So we all love the outstanding, Minecraft PC server Mineplex. We also know that at Minecon 2015, they announced their very own Minecraft Pocket Edition Server. At that point in time their motive for letting the community know was feedback and suggestions for mini games, but recently @Mineplexgamespe has been giving hints and screenshots of the servers potentially release.

Now many people think the release could happen within the next few weeks and this is going to have a major effect on the community. We have the poplular LifeBoat server for instance, which currently has seven game modes. Only one of those game modes are going to be in the Mineplex PE server.

Now for people who love playing turf wars well you're in luck. Minecraft PE could experience a substantial growth due to Mineplex being available for it. Mineraft PC players could start to play on it because hey who wouldn’t love to play on Mineplex on the go. I also want everyone to know that this article is based on my opinion and mine alone, I have played on both LifeBoat and Mineplex since the beginning and both of those servers are great and fun to play on.

Minecraft 1.10 brought along a new feature for adventure map builders - Structure Block. With this new block, map creators can automatically generate blocks in the Minecraft world. Perhaps the greatest project using structure blocks yet is this - a working Pokemon game in Minecraft.

YouTube user Reqaug even managed to get a working level editor inside the game, so anyone who downloads the map can make their own levels.
That title was kind of a mouthful, right? One of the most popular Minecraft server management tools ever is McMyAdmin. The team behind that, CubeCoders, currently develops AMP - essentially McMyAdmin, but supports more games and has more features.

Today they tweeted this on their Twitter account:

Here's Minecraft Pocket Edition on AMP! Running the Android version on an nVidia Shield. Seems to work nicely. :) pic.twitter.com/xXZByf1zqB

— CubeCoders (@CubeCoders) July 4, 2016

This essentially means that AMP users will be able to create and manage Pocket Edition servers in much the same way they can already manage PC Minecraft servers. Interestingly, they have chosen Nukkit as the server instead of the more popular PocketMine.

This might not seem interesting for players, but for anyone finding the server creation process too complicated, check out the source link below for more information about AMP.

You may recall Minecraft Pi Edition - a version of Minecraft designed for the $25 Raspberry Pi microcomputer that was abandoned by Mojang and never received an update. But that doesn't mean people stopped messing with it!

That also doesn't mean the Raspberry Pi hasn't changed - the newly introduced Raspberry Pi Zero is even smaller and cheaper. It's only $5 minus shipping and all the accessories you will need.

Enter JediJeremy, who while building a wrist-mounted Pi Zero device decided to record it running Minecraft Pi Edition with his accelerometer/gyroscope controls wired from an RC helicopter:
That's pretty impressive, maybe not playable, but certainly impressive. You can see his entire blog post about building it at the source link below.
There's a new minigame available on every console edition of Minecraft, called 'Battle Mode', that has been mostly welcomed by players. But the new mode has had a few notable issues on all platforms, leading 4J Studios to release a patch.

The new update should already be available, if not already installed, for every console edition of Minecraft. Here's the full changelog for your reading pleasure:
So I've created this Minecraft 'Family Tree' chart to make things simple:

As you can see, pretty much every current version of Minecraft has it's roots in either Minecraft PC or Minecraft Pocket Edition. Microsoft is putting a huge focus on the C++ codebase that powers Pocket Edition, Windows 10 Edition, and all the other orange editions in the graph above.

The Java version still hangs around, and the 1.6 beta release from years ago was the original codebase for every console edition of Minecraft.

Hopefully this clears everything up about the various editions of Minecraft. And if Mojang is reading this - we really shouldn't need a chart to understand all the editions of Minecraft.Corbin Davenporthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12580201916621383439noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8975551826666023390.post-58624070939640625642016-06-28T18:47:00.001-07:002016-06-28T18:47:40.486-07:00Don't expect Minecraft 1.11 details before Minecon

What happens when Mojang finally releases a long-awaited Minecraft update? People start asking for the next version, of course!

It usually takes a month or two for details about the next version of Minecraft to start appearing after a major release, and this time the wait will be a little longer. Jens Bergensten, Minecraft PC's lead developer, replied to a fan on his Twitter account:

@matthiass399 We plan to do snapshots with improvements and bug fixes, of which some can be new features

It's likely one of the big events at Minecon 2016 will be the first details about Minecraft 1.11. So if you're on the edge of your seat for PC news, don't expect much until September.Corbin Davenporthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12580201916621383439noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8975551826666023390.post-50656645664162909202016-06-27T12:20:00.000-07:002016-06-27T12:21:34.852-07:00The Minecraft Movie is coming May 24th, 2019

After a long and turbulent development process, going all the way back to when Mojang wasn't owned by Microsoft, the Minecraft Movie now has a release date - May 24th, 2019.

Virtually no details besides the date has been revealed. The movie will be also be released in 3D and IMAX showings.

In my opinion, the 2019 release date makes it very difficult to be excited - and Mojang is hoping Minecraft will still be as popular in three years as it is now. It's also going up against major films like Indiana Jones 5, The Incredibles 2, and Justice League Part 2.

Since last fall, one of the many DLC packs available for Minecraft: Xbox One Edition has been the 'Favorites Pack' - a collection of the best-selling DLC for the Xbox One Edition. But Microsoft is taking things a step further and bringing the Favorites Pack to actual store shelves.

Starting now, you can find the Xbox One Edition bundled with the Favorites Pack in store shelves. This version contains the base game, as well as every DLC included in the Favorites Pack. In case you can't remember, here's everything included:

Battle & Beasts Skin Pack

Battle & Beasts 2 Skin Pack

Natural Texture Pack

City Texture Pack

Fantasy Texture Pack

Festive Mash-up

Halo Mash-up

All of these packs combined give you 120 skins, five different texture packs, and two 'mashups' that completely change the look and feel of the game. If you have an Xbox One, or you're looking for a gift, the Xbox One Edition with Favorites Pack is a solid deal for $29.99 USD.
