Minecraft for Oculus Rift not happening, and you can thank Facebook

Oculus-Rift-2

The Oculus Rift is arguably one of the biggest advancements in virtual reality gaming in history. After being funded on the crowd-funding website Kickstarter in 2012, it's quickly changed the virtual reality industry by offering a cheap and well-made VR headset. Although the Oculus is currently only being sold to developers (it's not finished quite yet), there several video games that support the Oculus Rift including Doom 3 BFG Edition, Team Fortress 2, Project Cars, and more.

Minecraft was probably going to join those games until today, when Facebook announced they are purchasing Oculus (the company responsible for developing the Rift VR headset) for USD $2 billion. Notch tweeted shortly after the announcement, "We were in talks about maybe bringing a version of Minecraft to Oculus. I just cancelled that deal. Facebook creeps me out."

Despite no longer developing Minecraft, Markus Persson (aka Notch) continues to make executive decisions for both Mojang and specifically Minecraft. Minecraft is currently one of the top-selling PC games of all time, and Mojang deciding to never support the Rift may cause other game developers to do the same. Our favorite blocky game could just be the first of many games to stop support for the Rift.

  8. I have to say, I'm glad for notch, I think it is a good decision, but I wish Facebook wasn't buying out Oculus, they better have a good plan for this, otherwise it will turn out to be another "Virtualboy"

  9. That's funny because on Martin Littlewood' s youtube channel not to long ago, I saw a video of him playing a minecraft hunger games with the Oculus Rift sand I thought it was pretty cool. Let's just say with the perks it gave him, he should of have the red carpet to being the winner all ready rolled out for him.

No, it's not coming in 0.9 because they're finished adding things. They're just polishing it up. Fixing bugs :) Maybe 0.9.X...
