Fake Mojang support site promises free Minecon capes, fooled hundreds of players

Every once and a while, one of these sites crops up promising something for your Minecraft account in exchange for your user name/password. This is something called 'Phishing', where websites or emails ask for your private information to later sell or give away. A new website, disguised as a Mojang Support page, claims to offer Minecon capes once you log into your Minecraft account. The page says, "You found our limited edition cape registration page! Congratulations, please login and we will credit you your well deserved cape!"

To most players, this would be an obvious fake since Minecon capes are only distributed to Minecon guests. However, this could easily fool inexperienced players into giving away their Minecraft accounts. Mojang Support (the real one!) has already said on Twitter, "We have received tweets reporting sites offering free Minecon capes. Please do not provide any information to those websites - it is a scam!"

The owner of the website removed all personal information from the website's WHOIS database, meaning it's difficult to track who made the site. It was registered using eNom, and it seems the owner is somewhere in Paraguay. So be on the lookout for the site, and please share this article to everyone you know who plays Minecraft so they won't be fooled as well!

  4. These people who scam kids, what will they get from this, except a horrible feeling that they took some kid's good money and try to sell it. Web filters should look for these kind of sites and take them off the internet, those sites have no use in existing

  5. OMG how could people from my country do these horrible things! Web browsers should definitely block this

  8. I agree that it is wrong but I'm not quite sure how to make a web browser detect a scam. These types of sites usually don't have any immediate effects on a computer, (Meaning they aren't viruses) So web browser filters wouldn't see anything wrong with them.

  13. Personally, not trying to be mean, that would've been OBVIOUS for me, because a few years ago I had to spend HOURS being taught how a phishing page was written (this one is a typical phishing phrase), so also, if you want to learn like me, look it up online. Phishing phrases.

  16. You can get this thing called AdBlock and another thing called AdBlock Plus that work well together and will block this sort of thing, as well as viruses, malware, spyware, and phishing. And I have only seen about 100 ads since I got these two things, and I've had them for a year and a half. It even tells me things like 'WARNING! This site is controlled by a known malware provider! Entering this site may damage your computer!" [Go back] [Continue] ([]= Button)
You can get it off the Chrome Web Store. If you don't have Chrome, I recommend getting it. It also has built-in systems that help with that.
