Editorial: Next-gen isn't so 'next-gen'

When people refer to the next generation of video game consoles, like the PS4, Xbox One, and Wii U, the term 'next-gen' is often used. But the next generation of consoles have been disappointing to many. The hardware limitations of the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, as well as many software problems and bugs, have made the next generation of consoles not so 'next-gen'.

Back in August, 4J Studios announced Minecraft for the PS4 and Xbox One were in development. Despite not even being released yet, there are already numerous problems. The world size on the Xbox 360 and PS3 ports are around 1024x1024, and many were expecting the next-gen version to have infinite worlds.

Earlier this month, 4J Studios mentioned that the Xbox One and PS4 Minecraft ports would not feature infinite worlds. Many were disappointed by the announcement, blaming 4J Studios for poor development. But it's not 4J Studios' fault, it's the consoles.

4J Studios cited save file limits as the reason behind the world size limit, meaning the blame falls on Sony and Microsoft. Both the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 have a 500 GB hard drive. However, the Xbox One only leaves about 360-390 GB for games, and the PS4 leaves about 400 GB for games.

In addition, multi-player on both platforms is still limited to eight players and custom skins/texture packs are still a no-go. So is it really 4J Studios' fault that Minecraft for next generation consoles is still not up to par with PC? No. The limitations set on Minecraft for the Xbox One and PS4 are not set by 4J, they are set by Microsoft and Sony.

Hopefully we will get to learn more about the new ports of Minecraft in the near future.
