Minecraft Windows 10 Edition launches tomorrow, here's everything you need to know about it

Minecraft continues it's march of branching off into more and more versions with Minecraft: Windows 10 Edition, scheduled to be released tomorrow alongside the release of Windows 10. But what's different about it? Why should I get it? Can I still play PC edition on Windows 10? Here's the answers to your burning questions.

What is Windows 10 Edition?

Windows 10 Edition is essentially a port of Pocket Edition to Windows 10. It's not clear if it's a port of 0.11.0, or includes what 0.12.0 will have when it's released. You can play Windows 10 Edition with a touchscreen, Xbox controller, or keyboard/mouse.

Can I play with other people in Windows 10 Edition?

Yes, the first beta release will support playing with up to eight other people with Xbox Live (but cannot play with Xbox consoles). A future update will support playing with Pocket Edition players, and maybe other platforms as time goes on.

Will there be servers for Windows 10 Edition?

Yes, but it's not really clear right now if it will be at launch. Shoghi Cervantes, developer of the PocketMine-MP server for Pocket Edition, has said that the next major version of PocketMine will support Windows 10 Edition.

How can I get Windows 10 Edition?

First, you will need to update to Windows 10. If you're running Windows 7 or Windows 8.1, you can reserve your free copy now by following these directions (Windows 8 users will need to update to 8.1 first). Windows 10 will slowly be rolling out to everyone who reserved their copy starting tomorrow, so it may be a few days before you see it. It's not clear exactly how existing PC owners will get their free copy, but it will be available in the Windows Store app on Windows 10.

How much will it cost?

During the beta, Windows 10 Edition will cost $10 and be available from the Windows Store. However, you can get it for free if you have already purchased the PC version.

Can I still play Minecraft PC edition?

Yes, the normal Java-based Minecraft game will continue to work the same on Windows 10 as it did on previous versions of Windows.

Will it be available on older versions of Windows, or Mac/Linux?

The official answer is "no", but I anticipate it will eventually be released for Mac and Linux. Microsoft is slowly expanding their ".NET" framework (which Windows 10 Edition uses) to other platforms, so Windows 10 Edition may eventually expand it's reach.

Will it run better than PC Minecraft?

Much better. Windows 10 Edition is based on Pocket Edition's C++ codebase, which means it's incredibly fast.

Will Minecraft PC mods work on Windows 10 Edition?

No. It's not clear yet if Windows 10 Edition is easy to mod, but mods developed for the normal PC Minecraft will not work with Windows 10 Edition.

Are you a wizard?

Yes.
