Notch hints (again) at official mod support in Minecraft

A new post has magicly appeared on World of Notch, authored by none other than Notch himself (Markus Persson for you newbs). Right in the middle of the post about Minecon, he said:
One thing that kind of fell between chairs is the mod support.. Sorry about that, I take full responsibility for letting that get forgotten about. But when it comes to the new launcher, it got folded into a new exciting project I won’t talk about yet.
Back in April, Notch said on his blog his plans for what he thinks would be a good idea, relating to mod support. He said that developers would sign up as mod creators for free, download the source code for the game, develop their mod (or port it to a new format if needed), then sign it and submit it.

Do you think it's a good idea for Mojang to support mods? Leave your opinion in the comment section below.
