Editorial: What happened to the Sky Dimension?

You may have never heard of it. You may have wanted it. You may be wondering when it's coming, or if it even is. The Sky Dimension first appeared in Minecraft Indev as a world type. When creating a world, players had the option to select a world type, one of them named 'Floating'. When this functionality was taken out of the game, 'Floating' seemed to be gone for a while.

It returned in Minecraft Beta 1.6, but was only accessible with mods. It was possible, with these mods, to generate a world that resembled the 'Floating' world, but now was called the Sky Dimension. This hidden feature was taken away in Minecraft Beta 1.8. For a brief time, the Sky Dimension returned as a bug in Minecraft Beta 1.9 Pre-release 3. In this version of Minecraft, if you created a multiplayer server with the seed 666, a Sky Dimension would form in the middle of the world. This bug was removed by the next pre-release.

So, will the Sky Dimension ever come back? The answer is, probably not. I tried to reach out to Jeb and Notch over at Mojang, but I got no response. Right now, the future of this feature is in limbo.
