Mojang has taken the wraps off a new Minecraft world format, named Anvil. The new format allows for 256 block high worlds, twice the old limit. It should also make Minecraft act faster, since the new world format doesn't load empty spaces into memory. Biomes are also saved into the world file, which should make using tools like MCEdit easier. There are also lots of other technological changes in the new format as well.
