Jens, the main developer for Minecraft at Mojang, announced that he has got the local-multiplayer feature in Minecraft finally. This feature would allow players on the same network to join a single player world, instead of having to use a seperate server jar and host it themselves. This is similar to multiplayer on Minecraft Pocket Edition, and it is unknown as of yet if each player will need Minecraft user names. This feature might make it into the next snapshot, scheduled for tomorrow.
