I'm sure we all have heard of Apple suing Samsung to get their devices banned in various countries. Well now the fight has moved to Uniloc vs Mojang. Uniloc has announced that they are suing Mojang, and Minecraft's creator Notch, over their patent #6,857,067. The patent description is, "A system and method for preventing unauthorized access to electronic data [covering] executable computer code on an electronic device to prevent unauthorized access to electronic data stored on the electronic device." In other words, they are suing Mojang over features built-in to Minecraft Pocket Edition. They are also suing popular video games company Electronic Arts over the same patent that supposedly has been violated in their title, Bejeweled 2.
A document sent to Mojang (PDF version here) includes further information on how Mojang's game 'Mindcraft' (that's right, they did spell that wrong in a legal document) is infringing on their patent, and demand that it be taken to court. Notch has publicly voiced his opinion on the matter, claiming that, "Unfortunately for them, they're suing us over a software patent. If needed, I will throw piles of money at making sure they don't get a cent."
Uniloc, a copy protection company founded in 1992, has sued over 70 companies in their history, of which only 25 have been settled. Notable companies sued by Uniloc include Microsoft, Sony, McAfee, Activision (yep, Call of Duty), and Borland Software. We will keep you updated on this case. See the source links for more details.
