Review: SurvivalCraft for Android/Windows Phone

Survivalcraft 2013-01-12 19-07-56

There's been Minecraft clones since the first version was uploaded by Notch. Most of them are cheap (and not free) clones made by individuals. But there are a select few that are worth a download, and we traveled to the depths of the internet to find the best ones. The most interesting one we found was not for the PC or Mac, it was a mobile game designed for Android 2.2+ and Windows Phone 7.5+. SurvivalCraft is a game similar in layout and design to Minecraft Pocket Edition. The game starts with a pirate ship dropping you off, never to return. You must survive on the landmass the Pirates left you, however easy or hard that may be.

The worlds generated by the game don't have the grand mountains you come to expect from Minecraft Pocket Edition, but rolling hills, beaches, and frozen lakes are common. The 'killer feature' that sets this game apart from the original Pocket Edition are electronic circuits that can be created with items like batteries. The biggest problem I faced with this game is the on-screen controls: they are clunky and crowd the screen. The game does have some nice features like 1st/3rd person view, arial view, and a screenshot button. Overall this game is possibly the biggest competitor to Minecraft Pocket Edition on Android, and the only alternative on Windows Phone.
