Minecraft has revolutionized the indie games genre, and has certainly influenced large gaming studios as well. Mojang today announced that Minecraft for the PC has passed 13 million copies sold worldwide. To put that in perspective with other PC games, Half-Life 2 and Diablo III have sold 12 million copies, StarCraft has sold 11 million copies, and The Sims 3 has sold 10 million copies. The Sims 2 still hold the top spot for best selling PC game of all times, coming in at over 20 million copies. Notch said on Twitter, "The original version of Minecraft has now passed 13 million copies sold. Official statement: whoa." And we completely agree with him, it is absolutely amazing.

Meanwhile at 4J Studios, the company has announced that Minecraft for the Xbox 360 has sold 10 million copies. That means Minecraft has outsold Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, Halo 3, and Grand Theft Auto IV (only counting Xbox 360 purchases). Minecraft is still beaten by Call of Duty: Black Ops at 12 million copies, but that's not too far away. 4J said on Twitter, "Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition has sold 10 MILLION copies!!! Thank you everyone :)"

The numbers show that Minecraft is one of the top selling games on every platform it's on. We are excited to see Minecraft become incredibly popular, and what it will bring in the future. See the source links below for the original tweets.

UPDATE: To celebrate 10 million copies, 4J Studios will make Minecraft for the Xbox 360 50% off for tomorrow only. You can see the details here.
