Minecraft Realms, login servers, and skin servers may be slow under Verizon

A hot topic in the United States recently has been Net Neutrality, which is a proposition that would keep internet service providers (like AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, Comcast, etc) from increasing or decreasing the speeds of certain websites. This is a video game news site, so we won't go deep into the political side of net neutrality, but it has been a debate since the early days of the internet and isn't going away. If you are interested in the topic, we recommend you read about it elsewhere.

Currently there aren't many documented cases of internet service providers (or ISPs, for short) violating net neutrality, but it's becoming a bigger issue day by day. Recently Verizon Wireless has been accused of throttling (making slower) Netflix, which they have since denied. However, that doesn't mean that it has stopped or that it won't happen in the future. It appears that Netflix alone isn't the service becoming slower on networks like Verizon, the provider may be making all of Amazon Cloud Services slower (which Netflix relies on).

If Verizon is slowing down Amazon Cloud Services, it may cause significant problems for Minecraft players using Verizon. Mojang uses Amazon to host their Minecraft Realms, skin, and login servers. This isn't to say that it will happen, but it very well could happen in the near future.
