The Oculus Rift is arguably one of the biggest advancements in virtual reality gaming in history. After being funded on the crowd-funding website Kickstarter in 2012, it's quickly changed the virtual reality industry by offering a cheap and well-made VR headset. Although the Oculus is currently only being sold to developers (it's not finished quite yet), there several video games that support the Oculus Rift including Doom 3 BFG Edition, Team Fortress 2, Project Cars, and more.
Minecraft was probably going to join those games until today, when Facebook announced they are purchasing Oculus (the company responsible for developing the Rift VR headset) for USD $2 billion. Notch tweeted shortly after the announcement, "We were in talks about maybe bringing a version of Minecraft to Oculus. I just cancelled that deal. Facebook creeps me out."
Despite no longer developing Minecraft, Markus Persson (aka Notch) continues to make executive decisions for both Mojang and specifically Minecraft. Minecraft is currently one of the top-selling PC games of all time, and Mojang deciding to never support the Rift may cause other game developers to do the same. Our favorite blocky game could just be the first of many games to stop support for the Rift.

Woot woot! Go Notch!
ReplyDeleteOne developer down, the rest to go!
So, Corbin Davenport, you're fifteen, and you run this sight? That's pretty cool.
ReplyDelete(I've seen your Google+ profile.)
I am no longer using my facebook to post on this. Know me as Justin M Berry as before. Mkay.
ReplyDeleteI'm proud to say that I have never had a Facebook account :D
ReplyDelete......I like facebook
ReplyDeleteYep :)
ReplyDeleteHi again!
ReplyDeleteThat is neat! I imagine you do the Google plus thing too. Let me know if you need help on the community, I could always pitch in where I can. At least when I'm not a school.
ReplyDeleteI have to say, I'm glad for notch, I think it is a good decision, but I wish Facebook wasn't buying out Oculus, they better have a good plan for this, otherwise it will turn out to be another "Virtualboy"
ReplyDeleteThat's funny because on Martin Littlewood' s youtube channel not to long ago, I saw a video of him playing a minecraft hunger games with the Oculus Rift sand I thought it was pretty cool. Let's just say with the perks it gave him, he should of have the red carpet to being the winner all ready rolled out for him.
ReplyDeleteI'm waiting for John Carmack, the creator of Doom and former head of id Software, to leave Oculus, because you know, they're sellouts.
ReplyDeleteThey have a mod for it. Notch tweeted about it later.
ReplyDeleteI was saving up money D:
ReplyDeleteGosh dangit, Facebook. Y U RUIN DIS
I thought it was 4 billion.
ReplyDeleteWell... We could, together, all of us save money and buy Oculus back and save gaming, but we would need over a couple million...
ReplyDeleteThere goes the biggest acheivement in virtual reality...
ReplyDeleteI would develop for the Rift, but we gotta have more support. Facebook may creep Notch out, but I see no issue with Facebook.
ReplyDeletewhen are temples coming to pe?
ReplyDeleteand will there be any surprise features like in pc?
I think temples is still being decided to he added or not. Wolves was a surprise. I don't know if there was any others or if there will be anymore.
ReplyDeleteso your saying maybe 0.9.0?
ReplyDeleteNo, it's not coming in 0.9 because they're finished adding things. They're just polishing it up. Fixing bugs :) Maybe 0.9.X...
ReplyDeleteThey aren't finished adding things.
ReplyDeleteI have 200 bucks, that's not going to get any of us far.
ReplyDelete"We need more MONEY!"
ReplyDeleteMy $150 isn't gonna do much either...
ReplyDeleteMaybe a kickstarter? If not, ASK THE WORLD for money to buy them back. Start a United Nations of Gamers, League?
ReplyDeleteDon't Even Mention that disgrase
ReplyDeleteHey, the Virtual Boy was the best gaming platform ever....for getting headaches
ReplyDeleteWell, I guess it could all help! But I just doubt we're gonna get to 2 billion! But we could try. :)
ReplyDeleteTrue, but they already have added many new blocks, and they're kinda just brushing up on it. Tom_cc got the caves, but is just making them work better. Sorta like that with Otheer features too.
ReplyDeleteuh...my 600$ wont do any difference either wouldnt it?
ReplyDeleteLets do it! We can even ask Minecraft Forum community for support, because they are going to be pretty mad with Facebook, ruining minecraft gaming!
ReplyDeleteWE.....NEED..... OVAH NINE THOU- (oops) MILLION
ReplyDeletesite*
ReplyDelete(woo gramatical nazi-ing)

ReplyDeleteI'm proud to say I had a face book account for less then a week then dealted it.
ReplyDeletewe'll never get that far lol
