Minecraft PE 0.10.0 will be a small update, will not support skins made for PC

Remember when we said that Mojang is planning on releasing early, releasing often for Pocket Edition? Well it looks like Mojang is aiming for every new release to only have a few major features (and the usual amount of bug fixes) from 0.10.0 on. Despite the promise of improved controls and in-game music, it seems like 0.10.0 will only add skins. Johan Bernhardsson (a MCPE dev) said on Reddit a few hours ago:
[Maps] will not be in 0.10.0, that release will probably only contain skins and bug fixes. Possibly some small additional feature. [...] The first version of skins will not allow for the PC skins, remember smaller releases but then it will download the PC skin (if it has changed) when you start the app.

At this point, it's hard to tell what has been confirmed for the release and what hasn't. And there's the matter of skins - if it doesn't support PC skins then what will it support?

Johan didn't explain what it would use, but our best guess is that it will use the older 'legacy' skins - ones designed for Minecraft PC 1.7 and under. Minecraft 1.8 and later will include a new skin format that allows for layers on top of the entire body - similar to how hats on skins work right now. This video by Duncan from The Yogscast explains it quite well (skip to about 0:50 for the skins part).

Minecraft Pocket Edition currently uses the 1.7 skin format for the Steve skin in the game's files. It's unclear if it will stay that way - and thus support all 1.7 and older skins - or will introduce a new format.

Right now it's difficult to keep track of what's happening with MCPE 0.10.0, it seems like almost everything that has been confirmed has been delayed. Hopefully the developers will help clear things up soon - we're scratching our heads here!

Update: Johan has responded to us on Reddit, saying "We will support PC skins but we will have the syncing mechanism for 0.10.0 (or capes if you have one). The skins will be the same format." So maybe nothing about skins is changing after all.

  3. Yes, last time I checked, there was still going to be improved controls in 0.9.x.

  4. If boats, in-game music, etc. don't come in 0.10, then when will they come?

  5. 0.9.x is going to just be bug fixes. We probably can expect one more 0.9 update, and then on to 0.10.0. Lets just see what they make...

  6. Does this mean we will get hats in MCPE still?

  9. So no redstone then? :(

  10. I believe that was planned for 0.10.x or 0.11.0 to get all of the redstone related mechanisms in. Check out the Minecraft Wiki and Pocket Edition's upcoming features there to see some of what is planned for the future, because it might change. :)
