Bukkit developer swatted after being harassed online by Minecraft community

What happens online stays online, said no one ever. 'Swatting' is a new trend online where someone calls in a serious threat to the police, like a bomb threat for instance, on an innocent person. Police or other law enforcement forces show up at their house shortly afterwards and they are usually arrested and let free a while later.

Wesley Wolfe, a developer that worked on Bukkit, was swatted two days ago by a large team of police officers and a SWAT team. Whoever called in the threat said Wesley killed his parents and was about to kill someone else, among other things. Although Wesley was never sent to jail, it was still a huge waste of resources and time for everyone involved.

You're probably wondering that this has to do with Minecraft. Wesley was previously a developer for both CraftBukkit Server and the Bukkit API. His GitHub profile indicates he last worked for the project 11 days ago. He was one of the people responsible for the DMCA takedown notice on Bukkit, forcing the project to take down all downloads of the CraftBukkit Server software. After he issued the takedown notice, he began to be harassed on Twitter (and likely other places too). Here's some examples:

Wesley hasn't sent out any public messages on Twitter since the incident occurred. See the source link for more info. And I sincerely hope whoever swatted him will be faced with legal charges, you should never do that to anyone.

  3. Swatting can be a federal crime, as far as I know, but I live in a state where one county bans jokes in church, and is one of the few states where....uhhhh, lets not say this, is legal. Soooooooo I am not exactly the best guy to ask about this kind of stuff.
