Redstone Builders: How to install MCPE maps on iOS

This article was written by reader "</>" as part of our Redstone Builders program, which allows anyone to submit articles to us to post. If you are interested, visit the About page for more information. Enjoy!

As you are probably aware, Apple is strict, for various reasons, on their software. One limitation is changing other apps' files. This means that you cannot change the files in Minecraft, say, to download a map.

For a while, anyone who wanted to download maps on iOS had to either jailbreak or use a computer. Now, thanks to a emulator developer, you can. Here are some instructions on how to do this. (Note: This method currently only works on iOS 7-8.0.2, due to Apple patching the Date Trick in iOS 8.1, which allowed you to download revoked certification by setting the date back in Settings by one day.)

If you are wondering what an emulator is in the world of mobile (or computer, but mainly on mobile), it is a program designed to simulate something. GBA4iOS, PPSSPP, and nds4iOS are some examples of emulators. On iOS, most emulators are download by setting the date back in the Settings app. (As stated above, this does NOT work on iOS 8.1). To do this, go to Settings, General, Date and Time, turn off Set Automatically if it is on, and scroll up to change the date to the previous day. This is called the "Date Trick."

Now that you know that, here are the instructions: (And yes, you have to have MCPE downloaded!)

NOTE: Powered by Redstone was unable to verify these instructions work because we don't have any iOS devices. Follow all steps carefully, and we aren't responsible if your device spontaneously combusts ;)

  1. Do the Date Trick, following the steps as stated above.

  2. Go to Safari, and go to iEmulators.com

  3. Go to the apps tab and scroll down to MCPE Maps (It should look like the MCPE app icon with "maps" written on it in black.)

  4. Press install and confirm the download request. It should overwrite MCPE, but don't worry, you get all of your worlds back.

  5. Open it once, go back to Safari, and find a map (Minecraft Forum has many)

  6. Press download, and open in, then select MCPE Maps (some maps do not offer this, so you may need to look for a while)

  7. It should automatically bring you to MCPE Maps (if it doesn't, make sure you have opened it before)

  8. Press Load Content, the map's folder should be somewhere in Load Content

  9. Tap and hold on the map, then select unzip in the popup

  10. Put 1 after the name, then confirm

  11. Now, go to the unzipped file and open it (It will have a folder icon next to it instead of a paper)

  12. Tap and hold on the world file, then select move on the popup

  13. Go back to the Load Content section and tap and hold on the world file (make sure it is the world file by opening it; it should have nothing in it except Cores)

  14. Select Move on the popup, then select games

  15. Now go in the games folder, tap and hold on the world, Move, and select com.mojang

  16. Go in the com.mojang folder and tap and hold on the world, Move, and select minecraftWorlds.

  17. Check to make sure it is in there, and head on to the App Store, and redownload MCPE.

  18. Enjoy your map!

  6. Is there a way to change other files this way? Like a skin file for example.

  7. Possibly. While it would certainly make since, I do have my doubts. I tried to change the name of my world, and upon re-downloading MCPE, found the world's name unchanged. If you do try, b careful. Deleting one small file could totally mess up MCPE. So be cautious.
