Minecraft is probably the most family-friendly popular video game, with all things considered. There's no blood (unless you count large red pixels on some mobs), no cussing (on single player, at least), and no content that parents should be worried about their children seeing. But that's not how The Republic of Turkey sees the game.
Turkey's Ministry of Family and Social Policies, named Aile ve Sosyal Politikalar Bakanlığı in Turkish, is a ministry of the Turkish government responsible for famiy affairs and social services. Since it was founded in 2011, one of it's primary goals is preventing domestic violence against women - and apparently Minecraft of all things is advocating it.
The Ministry has reportedly started investigation of Minecraft, on the grounds is encourages violence - especially against women. Anyone who has played Minecraft knows the main character doesn't have a defined gender, and with no other human characters in single-player the only way to kill female players is in multi-player mode.
It's unclear if Minecraft will actually be banned or not, as far as I could tell there hasn't been any video games banned in Turkey in the past. Turkey is notable for blocking content the government doesn't agree with, with everything from social networks to media being blocked to some extent in the country. See the source for more info.

When you start to think about it... You Know that there are a lot of people out there who aren't to fond of Minecraft and it seems they take every chance they get to prove Minecraft is whatever they want to call it. Having played Minecraft, and talking to a few who dislike it, they seem to not have a solid reason why they don't want to play it... Such as the game not containing other types of violence (ex: guns) or just being "stupid". At they end of these shenanigans, most people don't realize that we argue about quite intersting stuff, which results in wasted time (Yay! Another thing to argue about... JK). Plus, I believe the world has gotten to paranoid over everything, things that didn't need to be thought to deeply about or barely make any since to have conspiracism over. Summarizing it all up, Minecraft is whatever you want it to be, and frankly, if Turkey believe that this game influences the minds of people to violence... Even violence against women to be specific... Then Turkey has the right to do what they want with it. It's their loss anyway. ;)

ReplyDeleteWhat the heck? How is that violence against women? Anyway, before 1.8 the main character was male.
ReplyDeleteSteve is still the default skin for regular player model

ReplyDeleteSure cause GTA (guns, hookers swearing and other stuff) does not encourage any kind of violence, first thing i want to do when playing gta is defenently wash my car, isnt it obvius.
ReplyDeleteIn MC there is no actual gender to thing even the cows are also bulls( said by notch), and i have never seen a weiner on a blaze or a ghast, seriusly, the most kid unfriendly thing in mc is enderman and stupid multiplayers who dont know how to have fun whitout messing whit other people fun. Im am no for turkey but if this goes on and gets accepted a little of me will die inside. Is like banning monopoly cause it makes people violent, of corse it does, it makes u rage quit. every game makes people RAGE. but i dont see people banning football and american football and any of other violent sports that cause wars, they are games too.
Correction on the article; the main character does have a gender. He is male, and his name is Steve.

ReplyDeletewhat do you think thos tentacles are on gahsts
