LEGO may be working on a Minecraft competitor called "Lego Worlds"

Back when Minecraft wasn't the popular game it is today, when it was an obscure indie game developed by some guy from Sweeden, how did you explain it to people? How did you explain the simplicity, yet immense fun, that Minecraft was? You probably said something like, "it's like LEGOs on the computer."

You may know that in recent years, LEGO has been expanding into video games with games like LEGO Batman, LEGO Marvel Superheroes, LEGO Star Wars, and more. These games all feature characters from the respective brands, and lately many of them have been open-world (or at least the 'hub', where the player enters levels, is open-world). LEGO has partnered with TT Games (not to be confused with Telltale Games, who are making the Minecraft: Story Mode spinoff) to create every LEGO-themed video game in recent years.

If Minecraft was just "LEGOs on the computer", it would make sense that LEGO would try to jump in on the action with their own Minecraft-style game. Engadget reported that LEGO is including flyers for a new game called "Lego Worlds" inside some of their sets. The tagline reads, "Explore. Discover. Create," which sounds an awful lot like how Minecraft is played.

The website on the flier apparently doesn't exist yet, so it's possible these weren't supposed to be seen yet. Either way, if LEGO is getting in on the sandbox video game market, I don't think anyone would be suprised.

  1. This would actually be really cool, I remember Lego Universe, and if this was similar to that but more sandboxish I think it would have a lot of potential.

  2. LEGO Universe was made by a different developer, but it could take elements from it.

  3. Voxels look nothing like legos IMO, but the same concept of making things exists. I'd imagine lego wants to compete with games more like itself like ROBLOX and Blockland.

  4. If this is meant as competition, they're already failing. LEGO is currently producing Minecraft sets, which would mean that they're actively advertising their soon-to-be competitor.

  5. So like Blockland, but now actually licensed by Lego. Cool beans!

  7. I still have a copy of a game called "LEGO Creator" that was pretty much the exact same thing, but it was creative-mode only (or equivalent). It was also superflat.
