It's not clear exactly what transpired, but one of the oldest developers for Minecraft PE has left the project. Johan Bernhardsson posted on Twitter today:

It would have been nice for a little more of an explanation, but if he's still working at Mojang he wasn't fired or anything like that. But this is great news for Mac OS X users, who (hopefully) will soon be able to use the new PC launcher Windows users have been enjoying for some time now. The new launcher looks similar to the old one, but is better integrated with Windows (it's in the Start Menu and Add/Remove programs) and includes it's own copy of Java.
If any platform needed the new launcher the most - it's Mac OS X. Java on Mac is a mess, with both Apple's variant of Java 6 and Oracle's Java 8 being used by Mac users. In fact, we wrote a guide on how to use Minecraft on Mac with the newest version of Java.
Hopefully we get some more info in the near future about what transpired at Mojang.

Too bad :| he did a lot for MCPE
ReplyDeleteHe's coming back, right? I mean, making a launcher shouldn't take the rest of his career.
ReplyDeleteI don't think he's coming back to the Pocket Edition team, he will probably stick with PC development.
