A few days ago we reported that LEGO may have spilled the beans on a possible Minecraft competitor, and it looks like it was real. Today, LEGO posted the early release on Steam for LEGO Worlds. And it actually looks awesome.
The game description says that LEGO Worlds is a, "galaxy of procedurally-generated Worlds made entirely of LEGO bricks which you can freely manipulate and dynamically populate with LEGO models." The game allows the player to drastically alter the landscape of the world using the 'multi-tool', something vanilla Minecraft is missing. It also allows for normal Minecraft-style building with LEGO bricks.
Right now the game is in something called 'Steam Early Access', which (if you are unfamiliar with Steam) is essentially a paid public beta. The game is not quite complete, but there's enough in the game to get some fun out of it. Additionally, the game will be at a discount ($14.99 USD) during the Early Access period, but when it exits beta, it will cost more.

As you can see, there's a lot of features that set it apart from Minecraft. But it's hard to not look at this as a response to Minecraft's success, especially with LEGO also manufacturing Minecraft-themed LEGO sets. ReplyDeleteI'm not sure if calling it a Minecraft competitor is a good comparison. If you're saying that works because it's procedurally generated, then by that definition Rust is also a Minecraft competitor.

ReplyDeleteMinecraft will always be the best game yet. If lego makes a ripoff off of minecraft, they will lose the compition with their greed for money. Lego Universe looked fuin, but most kids could't play it because of how much it cost, 20 bucks per month. I hate what lego is doing and I hope it stops.
