The biggest fear of most Minecraft players when Microsoft purchased Mojang last year was understandable - they didn't want Microsoft to dictate Minecraft's future. Microsoft has made one thing very clear recently, and it's that they aren't messing with Mojang. Matt Booty, corporate vice president of Microsoft Studios, told this to Fortune:
"Minecraft has a successful history of being in tune with what the community wants when it comes to the incremental advancements of the game over the years. Our team at Redmond has been working with the Stockholm team to continue that step-based development style, rather than releasing a Minecraft 2.0."
We actually wrote a few months ago about how Windows 10 Edition embodies Microsoft's vision for Minecraft. Essentially, Microsoft wants everyone on every platform to have the same Minecraft experience - and even play together. There's a lot more work to be done to get there, but Minecraft PE 0.12.0/Windows 10 Edition cross-play is a huge step in that direction.
Fortune also included a quote from Mojang's CEO, Jonas MÃ¥rtensson, and it's almost like he read our article. "One big goal for the future is to bring Minecraft as one game across all the platforms we’re supporting currently, and hopefully expand it to other platforms," Jonas said. "We just released a Windows 10 Edition beta, which marks the first time you can play across different platforms—from PC to a mobile device. The future of the game lies there, allowing our players to access the game on different devices but be able to play together."
Do you think Microsoft's acquisition of Mojang made the company better or worse? Let us know in the comments below!

"Microsoft wants everyone on every platform to have the same Minecraft experience"
ReplyDelete"every platform" Right, tell that to the Mac/Linux/PS players.

ReplyDeleteSo console and mobile players will be able to play with PC players? I don't think that any mobile device or even any console will be able to support what PC is supporting without lagging a lot. o_o
But that would be cool!

ReplyDeleteIt's possible in maybe a decade with the advancements in technology these days.
ReplyDeleteHave you seen how fast the Windows 10 Beta is? I saw 256 CHUNKS render distance already and it was playable.
ReplyDeletewel, they also want everyone to use xbox/pc/their tablets...
ReplyDeleteThat's porting the PE version to the PC, not the other way around, and the PE version has a fair few features stripped out. Porting a game optimised for mobile, where system resources are limited, to a powerful system like a PC will naturally be very performant.
ReplyDeleteYes, and if they extend the PE edition's feature set it will be the same as PC, but much faster. It's really not hard to see that the Java version of Minecraft is badly coded.
ReplyDeleteI'd like to see you code a cleaner game engine from scratch, on your own.
ReplyDeleteI don't see the PC edition moving away from java anytime soon.
Mac and Linux has the same exact Minecraft PC game as Windows, and the PS3/PS4 editions are identical to Xbox 360/Xbox One. Nice try though ;)
ReplyDeleteI'm developing on Linux this game :)
ReplyDelete(And I don't have plans to switch to Windows)
But Windows 10 edition obviously can't be played on those, and it's pretty clear that it's the future of Minecraft—much better optimized as well as beneficial to Microsoft, who would force people to buy Windows to play the full game.

Why would Microsoft or Mojang even want a Minecraft 2 in the first place. It is simply put, irrational. Why would they waste the time to make a Minecraft 2, when they are continually updating Minecraft as it is? I know the major updates have been pretty slow lately, to say the least, but im sure they wont stop updating minecraft as a result of its mainstream popularity over the past few years.
ReplyDeleteRight now Microsoft is keeping Minecraft fans pretty happy, and limiting all new updates to Windows would destroy much of that. It's in their best interest to keep Minecraft on Windows, Mac, and Linux, and it's fully possible Windows 10 Edition will be ported to other platforms in the future.
ReplyDeleteThose users they're keeping happy have already paid. They stand to gain a lot more by forcing users to buy Windows.
ReplyDeletei play only on mac and anything you can do on pc i can do (not better but the same!) ;p
ReplyDeleteMuch better
