Minecraft Wii U Edition will not use the Gamepad for inventory management

If you're unfamiliar with Nintendo's Wii U, it's most interesting feature is the large touch gamepad included with the console. Most games use the Gamepad as a second screen, displaying useful information or a different perspective. For example, in the Wii U version of Batman: Arkham City, the gamepad is used as a targeting system:

One of the biggest reasons players have wanted Minecraft on the Wii U is the gamepad could be used to show your inventory while you play. This would allow you to quickly move around items in your inventory while playing normally on your TV. But alas, it wasn't meant to be. Own Hill from Mojang responded to a tweet asking if this dream would come true:

Hopefully 4J Studios will be able to add some level of gamepad-specific features in a future update. But hey, just releasing Minecraft for the Wii U is a step in the right direction, right?

  1. Not at the moment means that there's hope. Perhaps they just wanted to get it out, and possibly will be updated at some point?
