Today is Markus Persson's birthday, the creator of Minecraft and founder of Mojang. He's known as Notch by the Minecraft community, and even though he doesn't work on Minecraft anymore he is still a huge figure in the gaming community. Here's five awesome things he has done for our favorite game.
That's our list of awesome Notch moments. Happy birthday Markus!
- Told AVG Antivirus to screw off - Almost a year ago, Notch was approached by AVG Antivirus to bundle their program with Minecraft. But where other companies wouldn't have even blinked, (coughcoughEAcough), Markus turned them down.
- Standing against monopolies - Back when Windows 8 was new, Notch publicly stated that Minecraft would not be available on the Windows Store. He said on Twitter, "XBox and iOS are proprietary platforms. PC is an open platform that I don't want anyone to be able to close down."
- Making a statement against Facebook - Back in March, the well-known virtual reality development company Oculus was bought by Facebook. Upon the announcement, Notch publicly announced that Minecraft development for their VR headset (Oculus Rift) stopped. He said, "We were in talks about maybe bringing a version of Minecraft to Oculus. I just cancelled that deal. Facebook creeps me out."
