You may or may not have seen Windows 8, Microsoft's new operating system for tablets and desktop computers with the new Metro user interface, with a Windows 7-like classic desktop for running older applications. Windows 8 comes with the Windows Store, a place to get applications and games that are designed for Window's new look (desktop games like Half Life or Team Fortress are not here, they are desktop applications). Today Notch, the creator of Minecraft, told the public clearly that he will not make Minecraft available for the Windows Store. He is allying with other game developers in stating that Microsoft is practically forcing all future Windows games and apps be available through the Windows Store. This is similar to Apple's approach of using a 'Walled Garden' technique with the iPhone, so only Apple-approved apps may be available for the iPhone and iPad.
Notch also reminded people that PCs upgraded to Windows 8 will still be compatible with Minecraft using the Classic Desktop, he simply said he would not make it available in the Windows Store (in turn, means no MC on the Microsoft Surface tablet). He went on to say, "[The Xbox] and iOS are proprietary platforms. PC is an open platform that I don't want anyone to be able to close down." Since the Windows Store is also where Windows tablets get their games, Notch said it would make sense to port Minecraft Pocket Edition to the Windows Store. I personally agree with Notch on this front, what about you?
