After waiting months since they first announced their intentions to develop Minecraft for the PlayStation line of game consoles, 4J Studios has finally announced a release date for Minecraft PlayStation 3 Edition. The official PlayStation blog for the United States reports, "Minecraft: PlayStation 3 Edition will be available to download from PSN on December 17th in North America. Minecraft: PlayStation 4 Edition and Minecraft: PS Vita Edition are also being developed, but we don’t have release dates yet. Expect them sometime next year." The article was written by Owen Hill, the Mojang Chief Word Officer (which sounds to use like a fancy way to say PR dude).
The article goes on to include a question and answer section, containing mostly information the Minecraft community already knew or could easily guess. However, it did confirm that (like Xbox 360 Edition) texture pack and skin DLCs would make their way to the PlayStation Network Store soon after release. The game does not currently support remote play, a feature in the PlayStation 3 and 4 that allows the user to stream the PlayStation's current game to a PlayStation Portable or PlayStation Vita console.
Other tidbits of information come in Mojang's replies to the article's comments. Mojang said in a comment that the PS3 Edition is "download only for now," and that there will be a free demo available to download on PSN (PlayStation Network) when the game is released. The company also reconfirmed that there are no current release dates for the PS4 or Vita Editions, so don't ask us either :P
