Mojang has had numerous offers in the past, but they have taken none until today. The company behind countless video games like Battlefield and The Sims, Electronic Arts, has announced their acquisition of Mojang for $1.6 bajillion dollars. EA said on their blog today, "We are excited to announce not only our purchase of Mojang and their fantastic catalog of games, but also that the next game in our SimCity series will be based on Minecraft."

SimCity 5 was released in March of last year to numerous problems related to DRM and online logins, and was not playable until several weeks after launch. Minecraft 1.8 will be renamed to SimCity 6, and will feature in-app purchases of diamonds, iron, and other resources for $4.99 per block. In addition, all Minecraft/Mojang accounts will be transitioning to Origin.

UPDATE: Mojang has confirmed that they are completely shutting down, and all their resources and developers will be working under EA starting next month. They have also confirmed that Scrolls and Cobalt will be discontinued and packaged in the 'Mojang Game Pack' on Origin for $49.99.
