First look at Minecraft: PS Vita Edition

That right there is the first screenshot from Minecraft for the PlayStation Vita. It was tweeted earlier today from 4J Studios, and later retweeted by the head Minecraft developer Jens. As seen from the screenshot, and clarified by Jens, the Vita Edition is based on the PS3 Edition of Minecraft.

I think it's certianly interesting that the Vita Edition is based on PS3 Edition and not Pocket Edition, but it makes sense. Mojang develops Pocket Edition while 4J Studios handles the console ports, and 4J wants to keep the feature set/codebase close to the same on all console platforms.

The screenshot shows some differences from the full-fledged console ports, most notably the absense of dynamic lighting. Of course this could change as it is early in development, but still worth noting.

  5. does anyone else remember many years ago when minecraft did not have any ports and skeletons were killers or when we had no nether and when redstone was implemented on the secret update

  6. Notice that the items (most noticeable in the armor and TNT) are not as detailed as in Console versions

  7. True, but that's simply because the textures have been scaled down for the smaller screen. The blocks in-game probably look more or less the same as every other edition.
