Editorial: Mojang, a Microsoft company

Earlier today, Microsoft announced it is in the process of buying Mojang for $2.5 billion. This wasn't as much of a shock as it could have been, rumors about an acquisition leaked a few days before. Needless to say until then, no one was expecting Mojang to allow themselves to be bought out. Not when Markus Persson, who is leaving Mojang, publicly shamed Oculus for being bought by Facebook.

But the question on everyone's minds is this: what will happen to Minecraft? Well now that Notch is out of the picture, everything he said he would (or would never) do in Minecraft is possible. It's unlikely the source code for Minecraft will ever be released, as Notch said he would do once Minecraft's popularity died down. A second Minecraft game might happen after all.

The community's reaction to the purchase isn't very optimistic. All over social media sites are people complaining about the purchase and making jokes about integration with Bing. But Microsoft is a business just like any other - they just want to make money. And they know just as much as you and I that if they disrupt the Minecraft community they will make less money. Therefore, it's in their best interest to keep Minecraft's giant community happy.

The truth is no one knows what will happen to Minecraft next. Did Microsoft purchase Mojang simply to add them to their portfolio of companies, use their developers to work on their own games, or give Minecraft integration with their services (world backups to OneDrive?). I'm willing to give Microsoft a chance and see where they take Mojang, are you?
