Microsoft purchases Mojang for $2.5 billion, deal will be complete by end of 2014

Mojang has a reputation for being one of the biggest indie game success stories ever, and now it's officially becoming part of Microsoft. In a deal announced a few hours ago, Mojang will join the family of Microsoft-acquired companies for a staggering $2.5 billion dollars (or two and a half Instagrams, if you're keeping track).

Microsoft still hasn't said much about what they plan to do to Mojang once the purchase is complete later this year. Carl Manneh, the CEO of Mojang, wrote on the company blog this morning:
Minecraft will continue to evolve, just like it has since the start of development. We don’t know specific plans for Minecraft’s future yet, but we do know that everyone involved wants the community to grow and become even more amazing than it’s ever been. Stopping players making cool stuff is not in anyone’s interests.

So there you have it, one of the biggest tech companies on the planet now owns Mojang. Lets see where this goes.
