Minecraft Pi Edition getting updated, but not by Mojang

Minecraft Pi: Edition is a version of Minecraft developed for the Raspberry Pi, a $25 computer designed for use in schools to teach programming. The Raspberry Pi isn't just used in schools - it's also found use in media centers, DIY game consoles, and even Minecraft PC Servers. But Minecraft Pi Edition is unique because it's free (as long as you have a Raspberry Pi) and is the only version of Minecraft with official modding support. Players are encouraged to create mods for the game using Python.

Ben Nuttall, a programmer and employee at the Raspberry Pi Foundation (the foundation that develops the Raspberry Pi), is currently modifying Minecraft: Pi Edition to function with mods written in Python 3. This means more advanced mods can be developed for Pi Edition, as well as taking one step closer to the Raspberry Pi Foundation's goal of using Python 3 everywhere on the device.

As far as the game itself goes, Pi Edition is far behind all other editions of Minecraft. It's still a port of Minecraft Pocket Edition 0.5.0, missing huge features like survival mode and beds. Daniel Frisk from Mojang previously stated that, "[Minecraft Pi Edition] updates will be far apart, but we really want to do it. Looking for best time to do it."

The Raspberry Pi Foundation wrote this on their site as well, highlighting the importance (or lack therof) of the Microsoft purchase:
One last note about the Microsoft acquisition of the Minecraft development company Mojang: many people have asked us what this means for the future of Minecraft on Raspberry Pi. In statements on their website, Microsoft claim they intend to continue to support Minecraft on all existing platforms. We don’t know for sure what the future will bring but Minecraft is important to us, particularly its use in education, and we’re confident that it won’t be taken from us.

You can find out how to install the new Pi Edition update at the blog post below. Enjoy!
