While Microsoft hasn't completed their purchase of Mojang, Minecraft 1.8.1 will mark the first release developed since the purchase announcement. We aren't expecting to see a Microsoft logo slapped on the game quite yet, but it hasn't been revealed exactly what 1.8.1 will contain. Nathan Adams at Mojang said the following earlier on Twitter:
Nothing specific, just the standard collection of bug fixes we've come to expect from minor releases. He also denied rumors that the weekly Minecraft snapshots were being discontinued, saying "We have always paused snapshots for few months after a major release." Mojang has done this for almost every release since they started snapshots, so no suprises there.
See the source link for the original tweet. Maybe Mojang will skip 1.9 and go for 1.10 ;)

We're currently working on both 1.8.1 (eta: soonish) & 1.9 (eta: not so soonish). 1.8.1 is bugfixes/optimizations, 1.9 is [stuff and things]
