Every year (except this year it seems), Mojang hosts a convention for Minecraft players aptly called Minecon. All attendees have the option of adding a Minecon-themed cape to their avatar in-game, which appears on any servers the player connects to. Since you can only get it by going to Mojang, they are somewhat special.
Unfortunatly, some Minecraft players are led to believe they can obtain Minecon capes by submitting their information to some rather sketchy sites. Nathan Adams, one of the main developers for Minecraft, tweeted this earlier today:
Unfortunately this is only the latest in countless spams like it. To put it simply, don't ever think you can get a Minecon cape except from Mojang. There are some other somewhat legitmate ways of obtaining a cape, like buying an account with a cape (although the seller could always be a scammer). So watch out for these phonies while playing, and see the source link for the original tweet.

"Why am I getting so many emails wanting "leftover minecon capes"? I suspect someone's fooling others into thinking they got a cape this way…"
