The ability to change your Minecraft username (at least one time per account) was initially supposed to come out in a minor update to Minecraft 1.7. It has since been delayed for various reasons, but January 13th (next Tuesday) could be the day we've been waiting for.
First Kristoffer Jelbring, a developer at Mojang, tweeted this with the caption Teaser':
If you can't tell, this is a screenshot of what appears to be the Mojang Account page with a new option to change your username. Then Daniel Kaplan, another Mojang dev, replied to it with:
See the source link for the original tweet, and start the countdown to Tuesday!
Update: While it's coming soon, name changing is defenitely not coming next week. Marc wrote on Reddit:

Kris has confirmed that Daniel was messing with me. Whew.
Even with extra holiday staff, we still got a flood of support emails, and we need to catch up a bit more so that we can support this feature when it launches (users who log in with a username will have to migrate to a Mojang account, that's where we expect the real volume of help needed). It's still scheduled for Soon(tm) (sooner than normal soon), and there will be a blog post and help article preceding the new feature so that you can get all of the details in advance.
