Not many companies will even consider the modding community when updating their games, but Mojang is helping them out. SeargeDP, founder of the MCP (Mod Coder Pack) project and one of the Minecraft developers at Mojang, posted this on Twitter today:

That's good news for modders - especially considering they are struggling to update their mods to Minecraft 1.8. Unfortunately this also has a flip side - the infamous Mod API that keeps getting delayed probably won't be in 1.9 since it would require a lot of internal changes. Oh well, maybe next time (or probably not)!
