Though we have yet to see a serious snapshot this year, we have seen bits and pieces of what's planned for 1.9. Today, Dinnerbone gave us a bigger glimpse of the features they plan to implement in 1.9.

- You will be able to dual wield items, including weapons, but you can't attack with the second weapon.
- There will be a "lefty mode" which includes a left-sided arm viewmodel that's also visible to other players.
- You will only see your second arm when you've got something equipped in it, or when you're using a
bow ormap. - Dinnerbone has nicknamed the "shield slot" as the "offhand slot."
- Swords will no longer block. Instead, shields will do the job.
