When Microsoft demonstrated Minecraft: HoloLens Edition (probably the same as the upcoming Minecraft: Windows 10 Edition) at E3 2015, many gamers began to eagerly await the release of Microsoft's augmented reality headset. But now Microsoft is saying, despite all the advertising they have done, the first version of the HoloLens will not focus on gaming.
The CEO of Microsoft, Satya Nadella, said in an interview about the HoloLens, "For sure in the first version, it’s going to be more about developers and enterprise scenarios." This makes sense, considering the first version will have experimental hardware and likely a high price (read: not good for gamers). Microsoft HoloLens has also been demonstrated for use with hospitals to show 3D diagrams of the human body, 3D presentations, and so on.
He continued with, "I did buy Minecraft to create a new genre of gaming for mixed reality. I wanted a hit game even for the new medium of mixed reality. And we will have that. Gaming will always be a scenario and there will be other entertainment broadly."
This may be somewhat of a let-down for anyone interested in the HoloLens surely for it's gaming potential, but like it's cousin the Oculus Rift, maybe it's better to wait for the hardware to become more enticing.
