Sessions Servers Have Been Down For 8 Hours and Counting; Still No Word From Mojang

Edit: As of 3:00 AM CDT, The Sessions servers are back online. There were a few bumps between now and then but everything should be back to normal now. No word on what caused the issue other than "technical issues".

If you've noticed difficulty joining multiplayer PC edition servers within the few hours prior to this post, you aren't alone. As of now, the servers have been offline for about 8 hours and 30 minutes and still counting, and as of me writing this it's early morning in Stockholm, Sweden, so it's probably going to be a pretty hectic morning for the Mojang support team.

The sessions server is the server that verifies that you are the person you claim you are when you're joining a Minecraft server, and it needs to be online for you to be able to hop on to your favorite Minecraft PC edition server. No one is sure of the cause of the outage, but many people believe the culprit to be a Distributed Denial of Service attack (or DDoS for short).

A DDoS attack is basically tens of thousands of computers infected with a virus being used by someone to simultaneously send meaningless requests to the server, making it unable to take real requests. These kinds of attacks are notorious for taking down websites and servers both large and small.

As of this post, it is unknown when the issue will be resolved, but we hope it's resolved soon.

  4. I figured I'd make this article because this was one of the longest outages we've ever seen.
