Very rarely do you see extremely dedicated developers doing everything they can to push the boundaries of gaming. John Carmack recently revealed he was the primary reason Minecraft: Windows 10 Edition will gain Oculous Rift support in Spring 2016. And it's quite a story.
John Carmack Oculus's chief technology officer, working on the groundbreaking Oculus Rift VR headset - designed to make virtual reality possible for the average gamer. You might remember the name Oculus, from when Markus Persson famously shut down all development of Minecraft VR after Oculus was bought by Facebook.
After Markus left Mojang after it's purchase by Microsoft, Carmack approached Mojang to ask permission to try porting Minecraft: Pocket Edition to the Oculus Rift. "I wanted to drive home this case: 'We don't want to ask anything from you. Just let us try. Let me try to build this. If you think it's cool, we'll figure out what we're gonna do from there. I am so confident it will be cool I’ll agree to just about anything here.'" he explained.
Over the next few months, he secretly worked on porting Pocket Edition to virtual reality, with Mojang's blessing. Upon showing off his work, he told Mojang over the phone, "If this doesn't happen, I'm going to cry. This is the best thing we can do for the platform. I think it's the single most important application we can do for virtual reality, to make sure we have an army of fanatic, passionate supporters that will advocate why VR is great."
Mojang and Microsoft were impressed with the results, and promply announced Windows 10 Edition would be compatible with the Oculus Rift early next year. John Carmack was extremely happy about the announcement, stating "This was a huge win for me, and everyone at Oculus and Facebook that made this happen — you have my deepest gratitude."
