WiIt's been a while since the last major Minecraft update came out. As a matter of fact, today marks 500 days since the last major Minecraft PC update was released - 1.8. This makes Minecraft 1.8 by far the longest-lasting version in history.
2015 was the first year in the game's history that a major update wasn't released. But why the wait? We are still getting Minecraft PC snapshots on a regular basis, and most of Minecraft PC's developers don't have any other jobs at Mojang. The major exception is Jens, who is in charge of both Minecraft PC and Pocket Edition development.
There's been a visible shift of focus at Mojang from the Java Minecraft to the Pocket Edition/Windows 10 Edition, and even the console editions have got a few substantial updates in that time. There isn't a concrete reason why 1.9 is taking so long, with the last few snapshots being mostly bug fixes.
