Microsoft buys MinecraftEdu, now developing Minecraft Education Edition

We don't cover MinecraftEdu a lot, so it's understandable if this is the first time you're hearing about it. MinecraftEdu is a modded version of Minecraft sold to schools, specifically designed for use in the classroom. With MinecraftEdu, teachers can allow students to build creations, explore maps, and more.

After Microsoft aquired Mojang in 2014, many people were concerned about where this left MinecraftEdu. It turns out this whole time, Microsoft has been working with MinecraftEdu on plans for a new product - Minecraft: Education Edition.

It's not really clear why a new game is being developed to replace MinecraftEdu, although I think it may be based on Minecraft: Windows 10 Edition instead of the PC Edition to run better on less-powerful classroom computers (we've reached out to MinecraftEdu for comment). MinecraftEdu emphasizes that they will continue to sell and support MinecraftEdu until Education Edition is ready, and existing MinecraftEdu customers will be given a free year of Education Edition.

Teacher Gaming LLC, the company behind MinecraftEdu, also wants to make clear they aren't going anywhere. They are currently working on an educational version of the popular Kerbal Space Program game - a game I happen to also enjoy. Get all the details at the source link below.
