Minecraft is continuing it's goal of being on every gaming platform ever, with Mojang annoucning that the game would be available for the Oculus Rift VR headset soon. If you recall, over two years ago Mojang was in talks with Oculus to bring Minecraft to the headset, but Markus Persson (aka Notch) quit talks with the company after they were bought by Facebook. It's extremely ironic that just the next year, Markus would sell Mojang itself to Microsoft and completely leave the company.
Now that Markus is out of the picture, Mojang and Microsoft presumably restarted talks with Oculus. Just yesterday, Mojang showed off a prototype of Minecraft running on the Oculus Rift to press. It's worth noting that this is just an updated version of Minecraft: PC Edition and not a new edition.
Reponse from the press was very positive, but it's pretty much what you would expect.
“Just getting it on to the headset seemed hard to begin with, but that was just the start of the challenge,” says Mojang’s Tommaso Checchi. “We got it running in 2014, but then we had to go through and make the game actually work VR. It’s hard to hit a balance where the game is comfortable but still feels perfectly like Minecraft, and you can still play with other people on the same server. VR has one problem – it’s hard to pull off an experience where you can move and rotate freely in a vast open world.”

After Oculus they should make it for the Vive as well.

ReplyDeleteThey are two completely different devices. Oculus Rift (VR) puts you in an entire new world, that is you cannot see the real world, whereas HoloLens (AR) adds holograms to your world. So Oculus Rift creates a new virtual reality while HoloLens augments reality.
