The timeline for features in Minecraft PE 0.9.0 and beyond was laid out almost in stone in a livestream by the developers back in April, but it looks like some of that may be changing. The release of Minecraft Pocket Edition 0.9.0 has been bumpy to say the least, with a total of four bug fix updates being released in one week alone. With all of these updates (only two of which we have written about), it's hard to keep track of what's happening.
In the short term, all platforms are on different bug fix updates. The Google Play Store currently has 0.9.4, Apple has 0.9.2, and Amazon (as ususal) is lagging behind with only 0.9.1. At least one more bug fix update is anticipated for Android, but once all platforms are on the same release the game (and multiplayer) should be more stable. Bear in mind that while Mojang is developing these updates quickly, Apple and Amazon are slow to review them. Pocket Edition 0.9.4 was submitted to Apple and Amazon yesterday, but neither service has yet to publish it for users.
The biggest news to come out of Mojang about MCPE is that new features will no longer be in minor updates. This means we can only expect bug fixes for 0.9.5 (and maybe 0.9.6?), and we expect this to carry on into the future. And some have contacted us asking when the '0.9.x' update is coming, but technically four already have. The 'x' in '0.9.x' is just a placeholder for any number, so 0.9.x can include 0.9.1, 0.9.2, 0.9.24535, etc.
In addition, the next release will be called 0.10.0 and not 1.0. Mojang plans to make small, incremental (and hopefully faster) updates in MCPE from now on. Mojang will continue numbering updates in this fashion until Minecraft PE has most of the features in PC Edition, and will then name it 1.0. Let's take a look at what has been confirmed to come in 0.10.0:
Obviously this could change at any time, but this is up to date at the time of writing. After 0.10.0 comes 0.11.0, which has no confirmed features (weather may be included). It looks like Mojang's new plan for Minecraft PE is to release early, release often. And after the six-month wait for a buggy 0.9.0, I think that's the best choice.
