Earlier this week we shared a rumor that Minecraft for Nintendo's Wii U console was in development. Like many rumors, this one turned out to be a dud. Today on his Twitter account Markus Persson, known as Notch, tweeted "I am not aware of any plans to release a Wii U version of Minecraft." He continued with "I agree a Wii U version would make sense, btw. The only reason for no current plans is we've got too much work already. I <3 Nintendo." Mojang being busy could refer to 4J Studios, the company responsible for porting Minecraft to the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, working hard on Minecraft for the Xbox One and PlayStation 4.
Although it seems Wii U owners have been let down again, this time around Notch is showing interest in a Wii U port. Back in March when Minecraft was exclusive to the Xbox 360, Jens (head Minecraft developer) said on Twitter "Microsoft has an exclusivity deal for consoles, When it runs out we’ll consider Minecraft for PlayStation, but Wii U is very unlikely." But for now, Minecraft for the Wii U still hasn't seen the light of day.
Update: Notch has made a comment on a repost of his Twitter post on Reddit, explaining futher into detail why he is interested in a Wii U and 3DS port of Minecraft and why it's not happening:
I'd personally love to see a Wii U version of Minecraft. Actually, even more so, a 3ds version would be incredible. There are some homebrew proof of concepts that show it's possible. The reason we're not doing it is a lack of time and manpower. Sure, we could enlist another third party developer to help us out, but we want to to avoid having too many parties involved with our games.
I'm not really that involved in the business part Mojang other than setting goals and visions and all that, so I don't know if Nintendo's been in contact with us. Recently, I've been very successful in just sticking to what I love doing, which is prototyping and learning and thinking about games.
